Edgar Allan Poe's "A Descent into the Maelström" tells a dark story of a shipwreck and a whirlpool. While the original cover presents a more literal depiction of the tale, eerie pieces such as poe's can benefit from a more abstracted visual, which heightens curiosity for the reader and adds further meaning to the overall experience of reading the story.
The rough, jagged lines are meant to convey uneasiness, and to also resemble the vantage point from the edge of a cliff, looking down at deep water. The dark background is also intentionally meant to give a greater sense of vastness and depth. The unique gritty texture was collected from digitized texture rubbings.
